Responding to a deemed "river health crisis" in 1996, a small group of concerned citizens formed a non-profit group that became "The Ruidoso River Association."  According to their website, the group was charged with giving "the besieged Rio Ruidoso a voice." The group was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in February of 1997, and by the spring of 1999 it had a due-paying membership of more than 650 individuals and families from all over the world.

Since 1999, I have had the great pleasure of knowing Dick Wisner. This year, it was my great honor to present Dick with a beautiful award, recognizing his tireless efforts to keep the Rio Ruidoso clean, safe and healthy.  The award was designed and made available by Avril  and Joe Coakley, owners of Ruidoso Office Supply and Hallmark. This award is meant to recognize the work of these tireless individuals, along with their spouses and devoted volunteers, in keeping a vigilante fight against pollution of the Rio Ruidoso (The Ruidoso River). Remember, pollution comes in two forms friends: "Natural and "Man-made." Both are hard to control, but a true war is being raged.

The 2007 River Clean-Up is history now, but this fact remains: Too much man-made trash was in the river.  Some of the stories told from volunteers included finding and removing couches, cars, refrigerators, animals, automotive batteries, household trash, and more nasty stuff that certainly doe not belong in the river.

Last year, one volunteer in his fifties, broke-down as he described what he saw in the river. "Our country and our blessed community is on the downfall, when people will live and treat our community like this," he said.  "What about our babies and our young people? Is this the example we want to teach them? Is this our future? We need to punish the guilty and teach the young the right way, the humane way, of keeping our environment clean and safe." This story needs to be heard every year.

There is a lot more to say and learn about keeping our water and community clean and safe. The Ruidoso River Association and it's volunteers have taken many steps in the right direction.  They need our help and cooperation.  Take a moment to think about how you can help, as you pour that next glass of water.
